How to Make Your High School Team, Part 2: Practical Tips That Coaches Notice

Making your high school baseball team is about more than showing raw talent — it’s about showing discipline, pride, and commitment to growth. Every little thing counts, from how you carry yourself on the field to how you prepare off it. Here are three simple but powerful tips that can help you stand out this tryout season.

1. Watch Film with Your Coach

Everyone has a smartphone, and most athletes record clips for social media. Take that same energy and use it for improvement. Watch your film with your coach and ask questions about what they see in your swing, mechanics, or body language.

This simple act shows humility and initiative — two traits coaches love. It tells them you’re not just chasing highlights, you’re chasing greatness.

2. Show Up to Interest Meetings

If your school hosts a pre-season or interest meeting, be there. These meetings are a golden opportunity to shake the coach’s hand, introduce yourself, and share your baseball journey.

It might seem small, but first impressions matter. Coaches remember the players who show up early, stay engaged, and communicate their goals clearly. It sets the tone for how you’ll show up once the season starts.

3. Clean Your Stuff

Look good. Feel good. Play good.

It sounds cliché, but it’s real. Coaches notice players who take care of their uniforms, gear, and equipment. A clean uniform signals respect for the game, for your team, and for the opportunity you have.

When you show pride in how you present yourself, it tells coaches you’ll bring the same pride to practices and games.

Final Thought

You don’t have to be the most talented player to make the team — you just have to be the most consistent and intentional. Watch film to grow, show up prepared, and respect your craft from head to toe.

And if you learned something from this, share it with a teammate who’s grinding for their spot too.
